The German concern Rheinmetall bought 50 Leopard-1 tanks from Belgium, part of which is planned to be transferred to Ukraine. Handelsblatt newspaper reports this with reference to sources.

According to the publication, the tanks will be reequipped, after which 30 of them will be handed over to Ukraine.

Earlier, the Belgian publication Business AM reported that the first repaired Leopard-1 tanks bought by an unnamed state were sent from Belgium to Ukraine via Germany and Italy.

These tanks were completely withdrawn from operation several years ago. According to the publication, Belgium sold the tanks to the OIP Systems company at a price of only 15,000 euros per piece, since the Belgian army did not have enough hangars to accommodate the decommissioned equipment. Since then, they have been stored in a warehouse in Tournai.

Belgium did not transfer the tanks to Ukraine, as it is too expensive to put them into operation – OIP Land Systems asked for half a million euros per piece to bring them into working condition.
