Russian special services recruited people from among Ukrainian refugees in Poland to cooperate with them through the Internet. The investigators of The Washington Post newspaper came to this conclusion. According to them, the recruited refugees received tasks from pasting leaflets to sabotaging the railway.
The tasks of the recruits, according to journalists, included pro-Russian agitation, reconnaissance in Polish ports, installation of surveillance cameras on railways and GPS “beacons” in military cargoes that pass through Poland to Ukraine. In March of this year, as reported by The Washington Post with reference to the Polish special services, recruits received orders to stage sabotage on the Polish railway in order to prevent the delivery of military equipment to Ukraine.
The Polish special services consider the Russian Main Directorate of the General Staff (known as the GRU) to be the customer. According to the journalists, they call this operation the most serious threat to the NATO country since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to The Washington Post, 12 citizens of Ukraine who came from its eastern regions and lived in the country as refugees, three citizens of Belarus and one Russian have been arrested in Poland on suspicion of sabotage and espionage.
The Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not respond to the request of The Washington Post journalists to comment on their information.
- About 80% of all military aid from NATO countries goes to Ukraine through Poland.
- The Polish authorities are strengthening security at the border in connection with the arrival of mercenaries of the Russian PMC “Wagner” in neighboring Belarus.
