The January decline in sales is most likely due to the annual seasonal decline in activity on the car market.
The majority of electric cars in January (52%, 1,063 units) were brought used from abroad. It is the import of cars with mileage that is the main source of filling the fleet of vehicles with an electric engine.
Used electric cars are bought, first of all, because of their lower price compared to new ones, because the purchasing power of Ukrainians remains at a low level. In addition, the import of such cars is stimulated by their “zero” customs clearance – there is no need to pay duties, VAT and a contribution to the pension fund.
Accordingly, 32.7% of the total number of sold cars with an electric engine (669 units) were purchased on the domestic market.
15.3% of cars (312 units) were bought new, and this is the largest proportion of sales of new electric cars over the past 12 months. It has been growing for the fifth month in a row.
The absolute majority of vehicles with an electric motor in January were passenger cars: 98.2%. The remaining 1.8% (36 pcs.) were cargo.
As of the end of January 2023, the total fleet of automobiles with an electric engine is 47,982 cars registered in Ukraine (taking into account those deregistered due to scrapping and export abroad): 46,145 passenger cars (96.2%), 1 833 trucks (3.8%) and 4 buses.
Top of the most popular electric cars on the domestic market
The first place has been occupied by the Nissan Leaf for many months, which can already be called the “people’s” electric car of Ukrainians. This is one of the most affordable models on the market today. In January, 178 sales transactions were concluded in relation to such. Volkswagen ID.4, placed in second place, has twice as low sales figures at the end of the month: 88 deals.
In third place is the cheapest Tesla — Model 3 (46 deals). Fourth place was taken by Honda M-NV (37 transactions), and fifth place by Volkswagen E-Golf (33 transactions).
Top imported used electric cars
As in the domestic market, the Nissal Leaf (180 units) took the lead in the segment of “freshly driven” electric cars in January. This trend has been going on for several years, but the leader may change in the coming months. Volkswagen ID.4 (162 units) confidently rises in the rating, and at the end of the first month of winter, it almost caught up with its nearest competitor.

The third place was taken by the Tesla Model 3 (114 units), and the fourth place by the Honda M-NV (69 units). Thus, the first 4 positions of the rating of “newly refurbished” used electric cars repeat the rating of domestic resale.
Closes the top five Tesla Model Y (67 units).
Top new electric cars
Volkswagen ID.4 (132 units) took first place at the end of January. The second place was taken by Honda M-NV (42 units), and the third place by Mercedes-Benz EQC (20 units).
The fourth line was taken by Volkswagen ID.6 (11 units), and the fifth place by Dongfeng EX1 (8 units).
It is noteworthy that most of the new cars are Chinese brands and models made for the Chinese market. At the same time, they are not imported by official dealers, but in fact, an alternative area of services for the purchase, delivery and sale of electric cars from China has been formed in Ukraine.
