The Russian Ministry of Defense reported an attack by unmanned boats on the patrol ship “Sergei Kotov”. It is confirmed that the attack was carried out in the southwestern part of the Black Sea, 370 km from Sevastopol.
The department’s message says that the corvette was attacked by the Ukrainian army. “Sergei Kotov”, as it is claimed, performs “shipping control tasks”, which, in particular, may mean his participation in the blockade of Ukrainian Black Sea ports. It is claimed that two drones were involved in the attack and both were destroyed.
The Armed Forces did not comment on the alleged attack. Ukrainian unmanned boats attacked the Russian military base in Sevastopol in the annexed Crimea several times. In May, the communications ship “Ivan Khurs” was attacked in the Black Sea, and in early June, the reconnaissance ship “Pryazovye” was attacked.
- “Sergei Kotov” is one of the newest ships in the Russian Navy. It was laid down in 2016 at the shipyards in Kerch and handed over to the fleet in July 2022, four years later than planned.
- The construction of the project 22160 series of ships was delayed due to the need to import replacement of the main power plant of the ships. Initially, the ships were to be equipped with German MAN engines, however, due to the introduction of sanctions, they were supplied only for the main ship of the “Vasily Bykov” series. He takes part in the war in Ukraine.
