Journalists identified the names of 32,164 Russian soldiers who died in Ukraine since February last year. Researchers assume that the real number of dead may be at least two times higher.
The Russian service of the BBC and “Mediazon” keep a count of the number of dead since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion. They use only open data: official documents, messages from officials and mass media, publications of close relatives, and data from cemeteries.
Prisoners remain the largest category of losses. Now the names of 6,073 dead convicts are known, most of them fought as part of the “Wagner” PMC, but there are more and more reports about the losses of “Storm” prisoner detachments, recruited on behalf of the Ministry of Defense of Russia.
Six people were added to the list of dead officers in the rank of lieutenant colonel and above. There are now 295 people in the list of dead high-ranking officers.
Most funerals come to Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk and Rostov regions, Bashkiria and Buryatia.
Journalists warn that these data are far from complete. They include only the dead whose names and places of burial have been established. Other research methods give significantly larger numbers. Thus, according to the estimates of “Mediazon” and “Meduza”, by the end of May 2023, the number of dead was about 47 thousand people. This number was obtained by analysts who studied the excess mortality of men of military age beginning in February 2022.

A relatively independent assessment of Ukrainian losses was last given in the spring.
