Russian hockey player Ivan Barbashev became a two-time owner of the Stanley Cup – the championship trophy of the American National Hockey League. His team “Vegas Golden Knights” beat the “Florida Panthers” in the final series, the last game ended with a score of 9:3.
The match took place on June 14 in Las Vegas. Barbashev scored one puck in it. The forward finished the playoffs with 18 points in 22 games. The total score of the final series, played to four victories, is 4-1.
27-year-old Barbashev is a pupil of Dynamo Moscow, in 2019 he won the Stanley Cup as part of the St. Louis Blues. According to tradition, the winners of the cup can bring the award to their hometown for one day, however, the NHL prohibits bringing the cup to Russia after the beginning of the full-scale invasion of the Russian army into Ukraine.
Due to the invasion of Ukraine, Russian hockey players are banned from participating in international hockey tournaments, they cannot perform there even in a neutral status. However, the NHL did not ban players with Russian citizenship. League commissioner Harry Bateman told the Associated Press in 2022 that athletes are playing in the tournament “for their NHL team and for NHL fans.”
- Two more Russian hockey players played for the Golden Knights in the regular season: defender Daniil Myromanov and forward Pavel Dorofeev. They did not play in the playoffs, their names will be inscribed on the Stanley Cup only if their team specifically requests it.
