The court in Amsterdam sentenced the linebacker of Spartak Moscow and the Netherlands national football team Quincy Promes to a real term. He must spend 18 months in prison for attacking his brother with a knife, De Telegraaf newspaper reported. The football player did not appear at the meeting, it was reported that he could get Russian citizenship.
The 31-year-old Dutchman Promes is the most productive player of “Spartak” in the history of Russian championships. In 214 matches for the team, he scored 106 goals, he won the championship, cup and super cup of Russia with the team. He is the champion and owner of the Netherlands Cup with Amsterdam “Ajax”.
On the night of July 24 to 25, 2020, in the city of Abkaude in the Netherlands, Promes, then playing for Ajax, stabbed his cousin in the knee. His cousin’s tendon was damaged, he still hasn’t recovered from the injury.
Due to the attack and the subsequent criminal case, Promes was forced to return to “Spartak”, for which he played before, and will miss the World Cup in Qatar. The player denies guilt and did not participate in court hearings. The court noted that this made the sentence tougher: if the football player had expressed remorse, he would have been sentenced to 12 months in prison.
The attack on the brother is not the only crime in which Promes is accused of the family. In May, he was charged with participating in the smuggling of two batches of cocaine with a total weight of 1.3 tons. They were intercepted in Antwerp in 2020. According to the investigation, the player invested 200 thousand euros in the operation, expecting to earn six million euros. Consideration of the case has not yet been completed.
“Spartak” did not comment on the player’s sentence. In June, the fans recognized him as the best player of the season. In 37 matches, he scored 25 goals and provided 10 assists.
- The Dutch newspaper Algemeen Dagblad reported that Promes plans to obtain Russian citizenship to avoid punishment. Moscow does not extradite its citizens to other countries. In March, the Ministry of Sports refused to help the football player in obtaining a passport because of his problems with the law, the “Match-TV” channel reported.
