The State Duma can cancel the jury trial for criminal authorities

A draft law has been submitted to the State Duma to exclude jurors from trials of criminal authorities. The document was initiated by members of the Federation Council Andrey Klyshas and Vladimir Poletaev, as well as deputy Irina Pankina.
The authors of the draft law propose to amend the article “Composition of the court” of the Criminal Procedure Code of Russia.
Currently, juries can consider cases involving people who occupy the highest position in the criminal hierarchy or participate in the organization of a criminal community. Such cases belong to the category of special gravity.
The initiators of the changes believe that the existing legal regulation does not fully take into account the specifics of criminals, connected with the need to increase security measures for court participants, including jurors.
According to Klyshas, the amendments will create additional safety guarantees for participants in criminal proceedings and will help ensure a fair court decision.
