The State Duma Committee approved a life sentence for treason

The State Duma Committee on State Building and Legislation approved the amendments, presuming a life sentence under the article on treason and stiffening the punishment for terrorist activity. The second reading is scheduled for Thursday, April 13.
Today, the article for treason provides for punishment from 12 to 20 years in prison.
The punishment under the act of terrorism is proposed to be increased from 15 to 20 years of imprisonment. The minimum punishment under the article for recruitment or involvement in the commission of terrorist crimes will be seven days instead of five.
In addition, the deputies propose to increase the prison term under the article on sabotage, including on objects of transport infrastructure, from 15 to 20 years.
The increase in punishment thresholds provides that the right to parole for those sentenced to life imprisonment appears no earlier than after 25 years and on the condition of exemplary behavior.
- After the start of the war against Ukraine in February of last year, attacks on administrative buildings and acts of sabotage have increased sharply in Russia. Attempts were made to set fire to several dozen military enlistment centers and other state institutions. The General Staff of Russia stated that cases of arson of military enlistment centers will be considered acts of terrorism. Previously, similar actions were considered most often as hooliganism and damage to state property.
