The United States is deeply concerned about the fate of the imprisoned Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, whose whereabouts have been unknown for almost 20 days. U.S. Secretary of State Anthony Blinken wrote about this on social networks H.
“We once again call for his immediate release and an end to the ongoing repression against independent voices in Russia,” Blinken wrote.
Navalny’s associates wrote on Sunday that they have not been in touch with the politician for 19 days and do not know where he is.
The UN Special Rapporteur on the human rights situation in Russia, Mariana Katsarova, also previously expressed her concern over Navalny’s, as she put it, “forcible disappearance”.
According to the Federal Enforcement Service, Navalny left prison number 6 in the Vladimir region on December 11. At the same time, the lawyers could not meet with him since December 6.
Apparently, Navalny was staged in a special regime colony in accordance with the court’s verdict on the article on extremist activity. Navalny was sentenced to 19 years in prison. Staging may take several weeks, since in Russia, as a rule, prisoners are transported by rail, and the colony may be located far from the Vladimir region.
On December 16, the US State Department already expressed deep concern about Navalny’s health. A representative of the State Department said: “We have informed the Russian government that they are responsible for what is happening to Navalny.”
Alexey Navalny, the author of numerous investigations into corruption in Russia and a critic of Vladimir Putin, according to many estimates the most prominent opponent of the Russian president, has been freed since January 2021, when he returned to Russia after treatment abroad, where he was taken after poisoning. In August 2023, he was given a new sentence – 19 years in a special regime colony on charges of creating and financing an extremist community. Navalny considers himself innocent, and the sentence is politically motivated. Human rights organizations recognized him as a political prisoner.
