The water level in the Kakhovsky Reservoir is decreasing – it is used to cool the ZNPP

In the Kakhovsky Reservoir, from which water is supplied to the Zaporizhzhya NPP for cooling, a decrease in the water level was recorded – so far it does not pose a direct threat.

It is about the main reservoir, which is part of the Dnipro River, and which provides water for cooling the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. As the permanent mission of the IAEA at the ZNPP recorded, the water level in the reservoir recently decreased.
It is noted that according to the project of the station, a large cooling pond is located near the units of the ZNPP, so the water level in it is higher than the level of the Kakhov reservoir, so there is currently no threat due to a decrease in the water level. At the same time in

It once again demonstrates the many potential risks for a large nuclear power plant in wartime and underscores that we must never become complacent about its safety and security,” said IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi.
He noted that he is continuing consultations with Ukraine and the Russian Federation in order to soon agree and implement a demilitarized zone around the Zaporizhzhya NPP. According to him, although there is already some progress in these discussions, everything is moving forward and agreed too slowly and “more determined efforts are needed from all sides.”
