On March 30, the historian and journalist Vladimir Tolts, a veteran of Radio Liberty, turned 80.
Vladimir Solomonovich was born in Ufa in 1944, graduated from Bashkir University, after postgraduate studies at the Institute of History of the USSR, worked in the Central State Archive of Ancient Acts and other research institutions. Participated in the collection of materials for the Samizdat “Chronicle of Current Events”. Together with Ivan Kovalev and Alexey Smirnov, he published the human rights information “Bulletin “B” in Moscow.
In 1982, he was accused of disseminating anti-Soviet materials and deported from the USSR. Vladimir Tolts has been on Radio Svoboda since 1983. As an editor, he was at the origin of the “Russian Idea” program, which was first hosted by Andrey Sinyavsky, then Boris Paramonov. Later – the host of the programs “Russia Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow”, the series “May Short Nights” – for the 50th anniversary of the end of the war, “Three diaries. Along the route of Steinbeck half a century later”, “Rosenbergs and others: Interior with a bomb”, “Norilsk the uprising of 1953”, “Rodyna hears”, “Pyatyorka” and “Pyatyorishniki” – the 5th Directorate of the KGB” and many others.
Since the end of the 90s, Vladimir Tolts has been leading the long-term author’s program “Difference in Time: Conversation about unfinished history”. He is the author of the multimedia informational and educational project “XX Congress”.
