The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, signed a decree on the postponement of the celebration of Victory over Nazism Day from May 9 to May 8.

Officially, according to the decree, the holiday will be called “The Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in the Second World War of 1939-1945”, and the day will be declared a holiday in the country. May 9 will be a working day, but a holiday – Europe Day – will also be celebrated on this day.

Earlier, Zelensky, making a proposal to rename and postpone the celebration of Victory Day, noted that “the majority of the peoples of the world remember the victory over Nazism on May 8,” since “the Act on the Unconditional Surrender of the Wehrmacht entered into force on May 8.” “This is an all-European tradition”, and Ukraine should celebrate this day “together with the civilized world”, declared the President of Ukraine.

  • Traditionally, in Western Europe and the USA, Victory Day over Hitler’s Germany is celebrated on May 8, and in Russia and a number of other Eastern European countries – on May 9. This is due to the different dates of the announcement of the end of the war. Many Ukrainian politicians and public figures also drew attention to the fact that Russia used the date of May 9 in its propaganda to justify aggression against Ukraine.
