20 facts about Kormotekh: how the Ukrainian cat and dog food manufacturer changed the market®

Kormotech, a global company with Ukrainian roots, turned 20 years old this year. She conquered not only the tastes of Ukrainian four-legged friends, but also more than three dozen international markets, implemented a number of social projects. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the company, we share 20 facts about Kormotech.

1. Parent company Enzym (production of yeast and foodtech) created Kormotech in 2003 as a project to diversify the existing business. After studying the market, the idea arose to produce food for cats and dogs.

2. Before opening its own plant, Kormotech outsourced feed production in Denmark. The product’s first launch on the market was a failure – Ukrainian consumers distrusted the colored granules of dry fodder. In America and Europe, it was common: the color of the pellet meant the corresponding ingredients – vegetables, greens, meat.

3. Today, the capacity of 3 Kormotech enterprises producing dry fodder and spiders is equal to 90,000 tons per year and is constantly expanding, because the market is growing rapidly. Kormotech supplies almost a quarter of the Ukrainian cat and dog food market.

4. Kormotekhiv fodder is produced according to the standards of baby nutrition. The quality of the final product is controlled at 60 points – from the selection of raw materials to the arrival of the product on the shelf.

5. 20 years ago in Ukraine, more than 80% of pet parents fed their pets “from the table”. Today, 80% of pet parents prefer ready-made food, and rightly so: after all, ready-made food is a balanced diet that contains all the nutrients, necessary for the health and longevity of the animal.

6. The goal of the Kormotech 2018-2023 strategy was to enter the TOP-50 global pet food manufacturers. According to the results of 2021, the company was in 51st place, according to the results of 2022 – in 55th place. The ambitious goal of the 2024-2028 strategy is to enter the TOP-30 of more than 3,000 manufacturers in the world.

7. Today, Kormotech is among the 20 fastest growing companies. In order to achieve its ambitious goal, Kormotech must grow at least three times over the next 5 years.

8. Every third Ukrainian cat or dog is happy to taste Kormotech products from the brands Optimeal, CLUB 4 PAWS, Meow!, Hav!

9. Kormotech uses more than 2,000 raw materials for the production of fodder, 90% of them are of Ukrainian origin. Among them are both the usual ones – fresh meat, vegetables, berries and herbs, and exotic ones – blueberries, amaranth, squid. The geography of purchases is from Norway to South America.

10. For 20 years, Kormotech has implemented more than 10 social projects – from helping animals after the war began in 2014 to a humane education program for schoolchildren.

11. The family business structure of the Vovk family includes not only system-forming enterprises – Kormotech and Enzym, but also investment projects, for example, Kormotech America (a project that conquers the American pet food market), petcare startups Animal ID, Rocketo, biotech laboratory Explogen.

Kormotech recently announced the opening of its own venture capital division.

12. Over 20 years, the Kormotech team has grown to more than 1,200 people in 5 countries. In 2023, the company was included in the ratings of the “50 best employers of wartime” by Forbes magazine and the rating of TOP-50 employers by Delo.ua.

13. In 2023, Kormotech appeared on the pages of authoritative global publications New York Times and Reuters as an example of a sustainable Ukrainian business that is developing despite the war.

14. After the start of the full-scale invasion, Kormotech, with the support of the Lithuanian international fund U–Hearts, created a global chain of help for Ukrainian animals – the Save Pets of Ukraine initiative.

In the first year of operation, the initiative attracted more than $3 million in aid. Today, Save Pets of Ukraine is more than 300,000 fed animals and more than 1,500 tons of feed provided to animal volunteers.

15. The Optimeal brand from Kormotech created Ukraine’s first multi-channel vetturbot Optimeal Expert 9100 service. Doctors took births in a bomb shelter by phone and treated wounded animals found on the front lines. The service receives, on average, 11 calls and 13 requests in messengers per hour.

16. The LOOK 4 PAWS platform from the CLUB 4 PAWS brand promotes the adoption of purebred animals. More than 1,000 animals have already been placed with the help of the platform.

17. In 2019, the company defined a social mission for itself – to change the attitude towards animals throughout Eastern Europe: not as property, but as companions and family members. 85% of Kormotekhiv residents are pet parents, have a cat, a dog, or even both.

18. For the 20th anniversary of the company, Kormotech launched the national campaign “At the call of the heart”, in which, through favorite and recognizable brands, it first gets to know the pet parents of its four-legged customers. In honor of the 20th anniversary, special signs have appeared on the shelves of Kormotech products in supermarket chains, which tell about Kormotech and its values.

19. For the 20th anniversary, Kormotech developed the entertainment platform Kormotech Family – a family album of Ukrainian four-legged friends, where you can add your own pet and tell its story. No matter where you are – in Ukraine or abroad, you can put your hometown on the map of the family album and place the pet’s profile.

20. In honor of its own 20th anniversary, Kormotech will donate UAH 100,000 from every 20 tons of CLUB 4 PAWS, Meow!, Hav! to help children and pets affected by the war.

The funds will be directed to the “Voices of Children” charity fund and the “Save Pets of Ukraine”* initiative.

Together with Children’s Voices, the company will equip pet-friendly family rooms for parents and children in hospital shelters in front-line areas, and together with Save Pets of Ukraine will purchase feed, medicine, vaccines and everything necessary to help animals in shelters.
