The international organization UNESCO has confirmed the damage to 274 cultural objects in Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia. “As of July 26, 2023, UNESCO has confirmed damage to 274 sites since February 24, 2022 – 117 religious sites, 27 museums, 98 buildings of historical and/or artistic value, 19 monuments, 12 libraries, 1 archive,” says the UNESCO message. The organization said it was conducting a preliminary assessment of damage to cultural property by cross-checking incident reports from several reliable sources. “UNESCO is also developing, together with its partner organizations, a mechanism for an independent coordinated assessment of data in Ukraine, including the analysis of satellite images, in accordance with the provisions of the 1954 Hague Convention on the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict,” they added. UNESCO recorded the most damage to cultural objects in Donetsk (78 objects), Kharkiv (55 objects), Kyiv (38 objects), Luhansk (33 objects) and Chernihiv regions (17). There is also damage in Zaporizhia and Sumy (12 objects each), Odesa and Mykolaiv (8 each), Kherson (6), Zhytomyr (3), Vinnytsia (2) and Dnipropetrovsk and Lviv regions (1 each). Among the objects of the Kyiv region that suffered from the attack of the Russians: the Ivankiv Museum of History and Local Lore, the St. George’s Church in Zavorychy, the bust of Taras Shevchenko and the monument to the Archangel Michael in Borodyanka, the wooden church of the Nativity of the Holy Virgin, the Khanenko Museum in Kyiv, the National Museum Taras Shevchenko in Kyiv, Holy Trinity Church (1909-15). Among other things, the following objects were damaged in Chernihiv Oblast: The historical building of the regional youth center, the former cinema named after Shchorsa, Chernihiv military-historical museum, Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, built in 1801-04, in Nowy Bykov, H. In the Sumy region, among others, the following were affected: the Okhtyr city local history museum, the house of the manager of the estates of Leopold Koenig in Trostyanka, the “Smorodyne” steam locomotive depot, the Forest Museum in Trostyanka. In Odesa region, the following were damaged: Odesa Art Museum, Odesa Archaeological Museum, Odesa Maritime Museum, Odesa Literary Museum, Church of St. Nicholas, Transfiguration Cathedral.
