Popularizer of Ukrainian ethnoculture, singer and folklorist Mariya Kvitka released the song “Roar and Moan” to the words of Taras Shevchenko. The release symbolically took place on March 9 – the 209th anniversary of the poet’s birth. Kvitka performs not in the academic version, but in the folk version together with fellow folklorists: Denys Ivaniv, Andrii Dutko, Volodymyr Shchybreu, Denys Mitsel, Dmytro Kokoshko, and Igor Perevertniuk. According to the singer, who as a folklorist has been researching Ukrainian traditions for more than 10 years, there are more than 1,500 variations of the performance of this piece, which differ depending on the region. On the anniversary of the start of the full-scale invasion, Kvitka sang “Roar and Moan” near the Shevchenko monument in Borodyanka, mutilated by Russian shelling. Then this video flooded social networks and collected many enthusiastic reviews. On February 24, Kvitka sang “Roar and Moan” in Borodyanka. And who but Shevchenko can give all these feelings? More than 200 years have passed since his birth, and as we can see, his words are as if they were written about today,” the singer says. The cover of the single was created by the Ukrainian graphic artist Dmytro Kryshovsky. Read also: Fight – win: in Balaklia, the Ukrainian military found Shevchenko’s poem under the Russian tricolor
