Directors from Yakutia were invited to the US Film Academy

Yakut documentary filmmakers Maksym and Evgenia Arbugayev were invited to join the ranks of the members of the US Film Academy – along with the directors of the film “Everything Everywhere and At Once”, the American singer Taylor Swift and the Canadian performer The Weeknd.

The Arbugaevs made the film “Exit” about a marine biologist studying walruses in Chukotka, whose life has changed due to global warming. In 2023, the film was nominated for an Oscar in the Best Short Documentary category. The film was previously presented at the Berlin Film Festival and was awarded the prestigious IDA Documentary Awards.

A total of 398 people from different fields of cinematography were invited to the film academy. The organization said that 40% of new members are women, more than a third belong to underrepresented ethnic or racial communities, and more than half represent 50 countries and territories (the rest are from the United States).

“They are recognized as outstanding world talents in various disciplines of cinema, have an important influence on the art and science of cinematography, as well as on cinema fans around the world,” said the leadership of the film academy.

Now the academy has about ten thousand members. The Academy of Cinema annually awards the “Oscars”, choosing winners according to a multi-level counting system. In 2015, a large-scale online campaign #OscarsSoWhite was launched: then all twenty nominated actors were white. In response, the Academy of Cinema took measures to increase representation among nominees and its members.
