Ukraine plans to vaccinate 260,000 children against measles – Kuzin

The Ministry of Health plans to vaccinate about 260,000 children against measles as part of the national vaccination program. Chief sanitary doctor Ihor Kuzin announced this at a briefing on July 17. “We now have at least 260,000 children who need to be vaccinated. And until we vaccinate these children, we will have the risks of a full-blown measles outbreak. Therefore, it is very important now that during the summer period, until September 1, until the children go to school, so that they get their protection, get the vaccine,” he said. However, the COVID-19 pandemic and the full-scale invasion caused the social isolation of children, so the incidence decreased. At the same time, the number of vaccinations also decreased. However, the doctor is currently verifying the data and determining how many children need a dose of the vaccine. According to the chief medical officer, more than 300,000 doses of the European CPC vaccine have already been brought to Ukraine. The necessary equipment for the cold chain was delivered to each region and appropriate measures were held among the medical staff. “At the level of all centers of primary health care, at the level of regions, teams are ready for such a start. Measles is contagious and dangerous, so please protect children from measles, come to the nearest vaccination point and make a conscious choice,” Kuzin emphasized. He explained that mobile vaccination teams will vaccinate children who missed vaccinations due to the war. This will happen before the beginning of the school year, because the measles virus is very contagious: 9 out of 10 unvaccinated people become infected after contact with a sick person. We will remind you that in 2019, the Ministry of Health made a decision and made the measles vaccine free of charge for all Ukrainians. The vaccination calendar states that a child should be vaccinated against measles at 12 months (first dose of the PKK vaccine) and 6 years (second dose).
