NASA astronaut Frank Rubio became the new US record holder for the duration of his stay in space – he spent the longest space mission in the history of the country.

The astronaut began his space mission on September 21, 2022 aboard the Russian Soyuz MS-22 spacecraft.

Due to technical problems with the external cooling system of the ship, the return of the crew to Earth became dangerous, so the mission was extended for six months.
“I am honored to be one of the few who have spent a year in space. This record will surely be broken again soon.” Rubio said.
According to him, the duration of the mission is important for the development of space research and scientific data, since a long stay in space, in particular, makes it possible to track the adaptation of the human body to such conditions.
It is noted that after landing, the man will be in rehabilitation for several months, as he has problems with the vestibular apparatus and balance.
The astronaut became the first American and one of seven people to spend a year or more in space.

The previous record for the duration of stay in space was set by astronaut Mark Vande Hey, who stayed above the Earth for 355 days, 3 hours and 45 minutes.
Frank’s record also makes him the fifth American to spend a year in space.
