The bullet passed a few centimeters from the heart: the story of a soldier from the Mykolayiv region

In the summer of 2022, 49-year-old soldier Ihor Bilokonenko was seriously wounded by enemy fire. The fragment passed through the body armor, pierced the lung and got stuck in the spine, the Ministry of Health says.

The fighter was lucky that the bullet did not hit his heart. However, he completely lost the ability to walk.

When the man entered rehab, he had to relearn basic things, including how to sit.

“No matter how strange it sounds, the first motivation to move despite the pain was the bad habit of smoking. It was because of it that he quickly learned to transfer from the hospital bed to the wheelchair.” – say the Ministry of Health.

During the year of rehabilitation, Igor managed to regain the ability to walk. As the soldier says, the most memorable thing during this time was the feeling of the first muscle working on his leg.

Currently, the man dreams of getting back on a bike. And after rehabilitation, he plans to return to the driving school where he previously taught.

For the first time, Ihor Bilokonenko defended the Motherland back in 2014. When the full-scale invasion began, he volunteered for the Armed Forces.

The military man says that in 2014 he experienced a lot of pain, so a full-scale war did not frighten him – he was ready for it mentally and physically.

Ihor admits that he was most impressed by the determination of his comrades at the front. In his opinion, it is such indomitable people who bring Ukraine’s victory closer every day.

We will remind you that earlier we wrote about the rehabilitation of a defender who almost lost his leg after being wounded during the fighting in Bakhmut.
