A necklace and a beaver tooth: Bronze Age artifacts were found in Switzerland after plowing a carrot field

In Switzerland, a set of women’s jewelry from the Bronze Age was found in a plowed carrot field.
The find in the community of Güttingen in the canton of Thurgau dates to around 1500 BC, Arkeo News reports.
Archaeologists discovered a necklace of 14 bronze spiked discs, 2 spiral rings, more than 100 pinhead-sized amber beads, and coils of bronze and gold wire.
Other items found included rock crystal, a beaver tooth, a hollowed-out bear tooth, a bronze arrowhead, several lumps of polished iron ore, a small ammonite, and a fossilized shark tooth.

Amateur archaeologist Franz Zach first discovered the “treasure” on his land in August of this year. He was walking in a field after harvesting carrots when he noticed several bronze disks in the dug-up earth.
The man had previously found many Iron and Bronze Age artefacts in the Güttingen region with a metal detector.
He immediately understood the archaeological value of the find and reported it to the Office of Archeology of the canton of Thurgau.
A team of archaeologists arrived the next day. She quickly realized that only block excavations were possible – a large piece of soil had to be transported to the laboratory.
Also, scientists did not see any signs of a grave at the place of the found “treasure”. The jewelry was probably buried in an organic container or bag.

Scientists believe that they have found a typical “jewelry” of the Middle Bronze Age. Judging by previous studies of graves, women of the Bronze Age wore a necklace with bronze discs between which spirals were strung.
It is currently unknown who hid the jewels and why. They could be worn as a kind of amulets, researchers say.
The ancient jewelry is planned to be exhibited in the Frauenfeld Museum of Archeology next year.
