Ukrainian doctors removed a fragment from the soldier’s heart with the help of a neodymium magnet

Doctors saved the life of a 33-year-old serviceman whose heart was stuck by a fragment.

The man received a mine-explosive injury on October 24, 2023 in Donetsk region, reports the Command of the Medical Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

A foreign body of metallic density measuring 7X6X5.5 mm was visualized in the area of ​​the soldier’s heart.

Military medical surgeons stabilized the patient’s condition and sent him to the clinic of the Amosov Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery.

The patient was prepared for the operation for three days. The intervention turned out to be difficult: the fragment got stuck in an important structure of the heart, namely in the interventricular membrane, which is topographically very close to the valves. So the wreck had to be picked up immediately.

The operation was performed under conditions of artificial blood circulation, the heart had to be completely stopped.

It was possible to get the metal fragment thanks to the method of using a neodymium magnet.

This technique was developed by the KMS together with civilian doctors and thanks to which the lives of 96 military personnel were saved.

The team of doctors who performed the operation

As reported in the National Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery named after M.M. Amosov, since 2014 together with military surgeons and specialists of the O.O. Shalimov National Institute of Surgery and Transplantology developed special neodymium magnets. The invention is used in order to find and remove metal fragments in case of damage to the chest and heart.

In July, with the help of a magnet, doctors were able to remove a stone fragment from the soldier’s heart.
