Construction and research in the Kyiv region was accompanied by an architectural and archaeological expedition from the Institute of Archaeology. A treasure of gold jewelry was found in the cultural layers of the 17th and 18th centuries. Experts assume that the decorations have been preserved since the time of the Hetmanate.

The Institute of Archeology noted that this is an extremely rare find that has scientific and social significance. Thanks to these ornaments, scientists will study the development of the material culture of Ukrainians during the Cossack era. In addition, the treasure emphasizes the high level of jewelry art of that time.

“The discovery of the treasure once again demonstrates the importance of professional protective archaeological research during any construction work within the boundaries of historic cities – our duty according to the European Convention on the Protection of the Archaeological Heritage, which, unfortunately, is not always fulfilled. The fact of discovering such artifacts also well illustrates the main purpose of archeology as a socially important science”– said the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

All items found on the construction site were transferred to the funds of the Archaeological Museum of the Institute of Archaeology. It is noted that later the decorations will complement the museum’s exposition.

Unlike robbers-metal detectorists, the work of an archaeologist allows not only to obtain specific unique things (which are transferred to the expositions of State museums, and not to private collections), but also to reconstruct our past – to open new pages of our history, which is extremely important for the formation Nations and understanding our place in the overall history of Europe“, added the Institute of Archeology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

It tells about trade, social and economic connections, as well as about the occupation and origin of its owner. It is especially important to establish the fact where it was found – this information can be valuable for studying of local history. And when the treasure is found by black archaeologists and stretched for a coin, because it is easier to sell that way – this information disappears forever.”.
