Same-sex marriage was registered for the first time in Nepal

The first same-sex marriage was registered in a village in Nepal. This happened five months after the country’s Supreme Court issued a temporary order giving the “green light” to such marriages.
The official legalization of the relationship between 36-year-old Ram Bahadur (Maya) Gurung, who was born a man but identifies as a woman, and 26-year-old Surendra Pandey took place at the office of the rural municipality of Dordi in western Nepal, Reuters writes.
The couple has been together for nine years.
“We issued a marriage registration certificate to the couple, taking into account the Supreme Court ruling and the instructions of the relevant state authorities“, said Hem Raj Kafle, Chief Administrative Officer of Dordi Rural Municipality.

In June, Nepal’s Supreme Court issued an interim order allowing same-sex couples to register their marriages pending a final verdict.
Sunil Babu Pant, founder of Nepal’s leading gay rights group Blue Diamond Society, said it was a victory for sexual and gender minorities who have long demanded equal rights, including recognition of their marriages.
“This is a historical event. This will open the door for them to jointly open bank accounts, own and transfer property like any other couple“, Pant added and emphasized that this is the first such marriage registration in South Asia.
