9,000 women in a class-action lawsuit against Disney allege the company paid them 2% less wages than their male counterparts in similar positions.

According to Variety, the lawsuit is the largest ever involving California’s Equal Pay Act, which prohibits workers from receiving less pay for equal work based on gender.

The lawsuit against the company was filed by employees of hotels and the Disneyland theme park, cruise lines, film and television studios Disney, ABC, Marvel, Lucasfilm and other divisions.

“Disney has screwed these women for four years. They love their jobs. They love the brand. But they want to be respected and treated the way they are in the workplace.” – said the plaintiffs’ lawyer Lori Andrus.

According to her, the starting salary for all positions is 2% lower for women than for men.

Disney attorney Felicia Davis says the plaintiffs are seeking to compare salaries across thousands of work groups, but just because two employees work in the same job doesn’t mean they’re doing the same job.

Davis argues that Disney would have to mount an extremely complex defense in court to prove that any differences are the result of various factors: education, training and experience.

Both sides have hired experts to prove or disprove the gender pay gap.
