The Mulready envelope sent with the stamp will be auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York in February. Its sale could fetch between 1.5 and 2.5 million US dollars.

Representatives of Sotheby’s said that it could become one of the most valuable items from the history of the post office that have ever been sold at auction, writes CNN.

The letter is dated May 2, 1840. He was on his way to 35-year-old metal factory manager William Blenkinsop, Jr., who lived in the small town of Bedlington, in the north of England. However, there are no details about the sender – it is only known that he sent the message from London and paid for it in Penny Black.

The letter was sent in an envelope to Mulready. Its author is the famous painter and designer William Mulready. On this envelope, he depicted Great Britain sending news around the world. At the time, envelopes and stamps were the way to prepay for shipping.

“This letter revolutionized the way people communicate, exchange ideas, share news and express their opinions.” said Richard Austin, global head of books and manuscripts at Sotheby’s.

The mailing dates are still stamped on both sides of the envelope.

The initiator of the use of stamps in Great Britain was the teacher and social reformer Rowland Hill. He introduced them to pay for postal items. It was wildly successful and many countries followed suit.

We will remind you that the Polish post office issued stamps to support Ukraine.
