In the US, the number of medical abortions has increased – they account for more than 60% of all cases.
The reason for this is that access to surgical abortions has been drastically reduced since the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade decision in 2022.
This is stated in reports Guttmacher Institute’s abortion rights group, informs Reuters.
Abolition of the right to abortion has led to an increase in the use of emergency contraception for termination of pregnancy. Since 2020, the number of medical abortions has increased by 10%.
In general, the number of abortions exceeded one million in 2023 – the first time since 2012.
However, access to medical abortion also remains in the balance.
The US Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on March 26 arguments about limitations the use of two drugs that previously approved Food and Drug Administration (FDA). One of them blocks the hormone progesterone, which supports pregnancy, and the second – causes the uterus to contract.
The FDA says the drug is safe and effective, citing decades of use by millions of American women with extremely rare side effects.
Guttmacher’s survey found that the increase in total abortions in 2023 was concentrated in states where abortion remains legal. Therefore, the real number of abortions is probably much higher.
We will remind, in Ukraine as well tried limit access to emergency contraception. However, the Ministry of Health later refuted it.
