A large copper age necropolis was discovered in the town of San Giorgio Bigarello in northern Italy. He is approximately 5 thousand years old.
The opening of the necropolis came as a surprise due to the number of excavated tombs (22 in total) and artifacts found in them, writes Arkeonews with reference to Archaeo Reporter.
The first isolated tombs were excavated in November 2023 and January-February 2024. They are only a small part of a larger cemetery, the exact size of which is difficult to determine because it has been lost for centuries.
A variety of flint weapons, such as expertly crafted daggers, flawless arrowheads and blades, have been found in many of the tombs, archaeologists say.
Archaeologists also discovered jewelry, in particular bead necklaces, dating back to the 4th millennium BC.
Most of the burials are individual inhumations: the deceased lay on their left side, legs bent to the chest, heads turned to the northwest.
22 burials, according to the researchers, were discovered at a depth of about 40 centimeters below the surface of the earth.
