The Tverskoy Court of Moscow arrested video blogger Yevgeny Savin in absentia on charges of discrediting the Russian army. More than a million people have subscribed to his YouTube blog. Savin is a former football player of the Russian Premier League, he left the country after the start of the 2022 war.
It became known about the initiation of the case in the fall. It was reported that the reason was criticism of the war by a former football player in an interview with TV presenter Ksenia Sobchak. In the spring of 2022, he filmed and published on YouTube an anti-war documentary film with the participation of Ukrainian football players. It was called “Yarmolenko – war. Savin is one of the few top-level Russian professional athletes who openly spoke out against the war. In April, a member of the United Russian State Duma, Roman Teryushkov, said that he and his colleagues had written a letter to law enforcement agencies to initiate a criminal case against Savin.
The article on discrediting the army was added by deputies to the Criminal Code in 2022. It is used by the authorities to prosecute citizens for any anti-war statements.
