In St. Petersburg, a criminal case was opened regarding the destruction or damage of objects of cultural heritage due to the graffiti “Rashka”, which was created by the art group “Yav”. This is reported by “Rotonda” with reference to local publications that published reports on the criminal case.
On June 12, the Day of Russian Independence, artists placed graffiti on the wall of one of the houses in the center of St. Petersburg. Under the large inscription “Rashka” they listed the dictionary meanings of this term: the medieval name of the Serbian principality, the river in Serbia, the architectural style and the vernacular name of the “RA” series trains.
In their Telegram channel, they accompanied a photo of the graffiti with an appeal to distinguish between family and state and not allow it to be derogatory names.
The graffiti was painted over by utilities on the same day. According to “Meduza”, a certain Sergey Chmykhun applied to the law enforcement authorities. He stated that his goal is to “punish” those who live in Russia and “talk quietly.” The publication clarifies that in March, based on Chmyhun’s denunciation, amateur archaeologist Oleg Belousov was sentenced to five and a half years in the colony, finding him guilty of spreading “fakes about the army.”
According to the “Operational cover” agency, a criminal case was initiated on June 15, and a 40-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman were detained. “Yav” in its Telegram channel confirmed the detention of the members of the group, but did not name them. It was later reported that they were released on bond and all electronic equipment was confiscated.
On June 21, the publication “Rotonda” reported that a criminal case was initiated against the artists of the group due to the “Rashka” graffiti. The article on the destruction or damage of objects of cultural heritage provides for punishment in the form of a fine of up to three million rubles, correctional labor or imprisonment for a term of up to three years.
On Wednesday, the art group “Yav” announced an auction at which it will put up a copy of the “Rashka” graffiti and a few more of its works. Proceeds will go to help detained artists.
