On April 20, a rare phenomenon – a hybrid solar eclipse – will be observed in some regions of the Pacific and Indian oceans. First, the hybrid eclipse becomes annular (the Moon partially obscures the sun’s disk), then total (completely obscuring), and then annular again. Such eclipses happen quite rarely, only a few times a century. Humanity will see one of them already on April 20, Space reports. The hybrid eclipse will not be visible from Ukraine or the United States. Residents of Western Australia, East Timor and East Indonesia will be able to watch it. At the same time, they will only see a total solar eclipse. Papua New Guinea will see 87% of the sun’s disk covered, and 95% in the Marshall Islands. As a reminder, usually hybrid solar eclipses change from total to annular. In some places, the Moon completely obscures the Sun, and in others – partially. The last eclipse of this type took place almost 10 years ago, on November 3, 2013. The next hybrid solar eclipse after this month will be in November 2031 and will be visible from some areas of the US. The next time observers will be able to see a hybrid eclipse is on March 23, 2164.
