A journalist from Luxembourg traveled to Vinnytsia by bicycle to help Ukraine

Luxembourg-based journalist Michel Merten rode over two thousand kilometers by bicycle to raise money for Ukrainian volunteers and the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The activist organized a charity bicycle tour from the beginning of July and has already reached Vinnytsia, the Vinnytsia City Council reports. In addition to fundraising, the man helps develop the Kharkiv project, which deals with packing dry rations, and supports a rehabilitation center for children in the Carpathians. But last December, he was offered to accompany the public organization “LUkraine asbl” in a motorcade from Luxembourg to Ukraine. “When I stood on the observation deck in Kyiv shortly after Christmas and looked down on the Dnipro, I realized, despite the air anxiety: I have to return here in the summer of 2023. That’s why I took a vacation and on July 1 I’m going on a charity bike tour from Luxembourg to Kyiv. This a sign of solidarity with a beautiful country that needs help,” Michel wrote. The route to Vinnytsia ran through Luxembourg, Schengen, Nuremberg, Pilsen, Prague, Auschwitz, Krakow, Lviv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Bar. In his shoulder bag, the man carries various flags – Germany, Luxembourg, Poland, the Czech Republic and other countries. And the Ukrainian one – tied on his shoulders. “Ukraine is a wonderful country, and wonderful people live here. In my opinion, Luxembourg has a close and long relationship with Ukraine, we have a similar history. On May 10, 1944, Luxembourg was occupied by the Nazis. Therefore, May 10 has the same meaning for us as for Ukrainians on February 24. Luxembourg became one of the countries that immediately started helping Ukraine with ammunition,” said Michel Merten. The organization LUkraine asbl, to which Michelle will donate, helps Ukrainian refugees with housing and language learning, provides humanitarian aid, ambulances for rescuers, turnstiles for doctors and other necessary things, and also informs about the war in Ukraine.
