Volodymyr Ovsyannikov lost an arm and an eye at the front and underwent 10 operations to save his leg cut by splinters. All the time, a mother-teacher is by his side, who conducts online lessons for schoolchildren right from her son’s room.

The fighter’s story was shared at the Nezlamni national rehabilitation center.

47-year-old Volodymyr Ovsyannikov hails from the village of Andriivka in the Dnipropetrovsk region. He went to war as a volunteer. However, the man was not accepted into the army immediately – at first they refused because of his health. In March 2022, Volodymyr got his way and stood up to defend the Motherland.

In his peaceful life, he was engaged in hunting, so he was good at tracking. It was because of this skill in the army that Volodymyr became a scout. He had to fight in Kherson region and Donetsk region.

In July 2023, the defender was seriously injured.

“Then there was heavy shelling. The Russians attacked us from all sides. I adjusted the fire. There was a flight and one of my comrades was wounded, I ran up to help him and at the same moment the enemy aimed directly at us – I took the entire blow.” – recalls Volodymyr.

The soldier’s body was almost completely cut by fragments. He lost his right hand, part of the fingers on his left hand and an eye. The right leg was also severely damaged – there was a high risk of amputation.

The scout underwent more than 20 operations. 10 of them were performed to preserve the lower limb. Doctors worked to restore the integrity of the bone and transplanted the patient’s own soft tissues.

When Volodymyr was taken to the rehabilitation center, his mother came with him. The woman is always close to her son. She works as a teacher, so she conducts online lessons directly from the hospital ward.

Currently, to avoid complications, Volodymyr works with a physical therapist every day.

“We are working on the strength of the patient’s muscles to prevent their atrophy, as well as with the contracture in Volodymyr’s joints. He is already moving from the bed to the wheelchair on his own, this is a great success.” – said doctor Khrystyna Tsap.

About 10 interventions await the defender ahead. It will be a series of plastic surgeries to restore the face. After that, there will be months of rehabilitation and the installation of a prosthetic arm.

“Despite everything, I dream of returning to the front. I know it won’t be zero, but I want to be useful and help my brothers.” – shares Volodymyr.
