In the massif of the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, which is located in Rakhiv in Zakarpattia, camera traps captured a rare animal. This is a forest cat that was walking in the forest and basking in the sun, the employees of the nature conservation area reported. The animal is similar to domestic cat breeds, but slightly larger, has strong paws and a relatively short blunt black tail. They lead a solitary lifestyle. They rarely approach human settlements and avoid contact with them. Wild cats live in different areas: mountains; beech and mixed forests; swamps and reed thickets; gorges of rocks. In the Carpathian Biosphere Reserve, they say that these animals hunt only at dusk and at night. During the day they rest in cozy places. Feeds mainly on mice and insects. Sometimes, birds, reptiles and surf. The wild cat’s natural enemies are the lynx, wolf and jackal. It is not easy to hunt them, because they know how to hide well, for example, in trees. They give birth to two to four kittens. Stray cats harm the purity of this species. Because, due to mating with wild cats, hybrids are born in them. The reasons for the decrease in the population of the species: hunting them by predators; deforestation, especially timber; significant human agricultural activity; population density. It will be recalled that a resident of Kyiv, who wanted to illegally cross the border with Hungary, took with him a camera trap of the border guards, which he found on a tree.
