An American man and his 6-year-old daughter while fishing on Lake Michigan noticed an unusual object, which turned out to be a previously unknown wreck of a ship that sank in 1871.
According to CNN, Tim Wallack and his daughter Henley live in Peshtigo (Wisconsin). They often go fishing. This time, near Green Island, the girl saw something unusual and thought it was an octopus. However, the father assumed that it was the wreckage of a ship that had crashed.
“I was surprised that I had never seen this wreck before, even though it is a place where people regularly fish.”– said Vollak.
The man could not identify the ship from the wreckage. The Wisconsin Historical Society also had no information about this shipwreck site.
On Dec. 4, crews working with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources used a remote-controlled vehicle to investigate the crash site. They discovered a wooden three-masted barkentine (sailing vessel) in the water – it was at a depth of about three meters.

Although officials have not yet identified the ship, the location where it was found indicates that it is the George L. Newman Barquentine, according to the Wisconsin Historical Society. They say that this ship was built in Ohio in 1855 and was almost 40 meters long.
The ship was wrecked on October 8, 1871 by heavy smoke from the Great Peshtigo Fire, the largest wildfire in US history. The lighthouse keeper saved the crew. Together they spent a week pulling what was left of the ship out of the water.
In the spring, the Wisconsin Historical Society will inspect the wreck and evaluate it for listing on the National Register of Historic Places.
A few months ago, another long-lost ship was spotted in Lake Michigan. The schooner Trinidad, built in 1867, was wrecked in 1881, the historical society said.
