The idea to create a platform for discussions arose during the preparation of a new joint project. “The theater in Zurich is a big partner of mine – in December 2022, the big tour of the Theater on the Left Bank “Bad Roads” took place here. This was also my agreement, and I am very grateful that the theater warmly welcomed the Left Bankers. And just two weeks ago, rehearsals began here of our new project with Pavel Aryeh – the performance “Antigone from Buchi”. In parallel with this, he suggested that the theater make a Ukrainian lobby, and in German it is a Ukrainian kiosk – where we could raise important topics, hold discussions, give the Swiss audience an opportunity to understand us , and to give the opportunity to the Ukrainian audience, which is also here now, to feel at home, to get this connection,” Zhirkov explained. The main thesis of the meeting is that the Ukrainian people and culture are finally entering the European cultural context with full rights, not as an appendage to the “great Russian culture”, but as a separate art . The interest in our topics here is extremely high. The only thing that we cannot stop, and these are only our initial steps in the world. We must actively work on this. It is important to have such representation, to give such people a voice in Europe,” says Zhirkov. So I do not feel tired of Ukraine – on the contrary, I feel curious. I think that our task will be to seize the initiative at some point – and start talking not just about the war, but start talking about ourselves. To become part of the European discourse, but for this we need big changes inside our country, which for some reason we do not want to do – but that’s a completely different issue,” says Zhirkov.
