Ukrainian startup Respeecher is training a neural network to recognize the Crimean Tatar language. Voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa will be able to recognize commands, translate text, search for information, the founders of the project told “Ukrainian Pravda. Life”. According to the authors of the project, this will contribute to the popularization of the language among native speakers. The Respeecher team created synthesized voices for Hollywood, including the voice of Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker for the Star Wars films. But currently the developers prioritize the popularization of the Crimean Tatar language. “The process of collecting and analyzing information is quite time-consuming: it can take from several weeks to several months, depending on the quality of the audio. However, our team wants this resource to be free and available in open sources. We believe that this will help popularize the use, both Ukrainian and Crimean Tatar,” says Dmytro Belevtsov, technical director and co-founder of Respeecher. The startup asks to record in a quiet room with as little background noise as possible. “The more distinct accents and tonalities the artificial intelligence model analyzes, the more accurate the result of speech recognition will be,” the developers note. They assure that no data of specific persons will be stored, and other people’s voices will not be synthesized from the recordings. They will be used exclusively for training the neural network as a whole and for better recognition of Crimean Tatar. This resource can be used both by individual developers to improve the audio perception of the Ukrainian language in their product, and by large corporations, such as Facebook, Google, or assistants such as Siri.
