The wooden church of St. Michael, which is an architectural monument of national importance, burned down in the village of Smozhe, Stryi District, Lviv Region.

Firefighters extinguished the fire, but the 19th century church was destroyed. It was possible to save only the bell tower, reports the State Emergency Service and Interfax-Ukraine.

“On March 23, at 10:53 a.m., a report was received about a fire in the village of Smozhe, Stryi district. The fire started in a wooden church, 27x7m in size and 20m high.

By the time firefighters arrived, the flames had spread over a large area and engulfed most of the building.” – say the State Emergency Service.

The fire quickly engulfed the wooden structures, so it was difficult to extinguish it.

During the elimination of the fire, the domes of the church collapsed, and there was also a threat of the fire spreading to the wooden two-story bell tower of the church, located next to the church.

Because of dense smoke, the rescuers worked in respiratory protection devices.

“Firefighters managed to localize the fire at 12:14 and eliminate it at 12:37. 40 rescuers and 6 units of special equipment were involved in extinguishing the fire”emergency workers report.
