About 500 athletes from Russia and Belarus will be allowed to participate in the Asian Games, which will be held in Hangzhou, China, from September 23 to October 8. This was reported by Inside The Games.

Athletes will compete under a neutral flag, the use of national symbols will be prohibited. They will also not have the right to receive the medals of the competitors. Participation in the Asian Games will allow athletes to qualify for the Olympics in Paris in 2024.

In March, the International Olympic Committee clarified its recommendations on the procedure for admitting athletes from Russia and Belarus to the Olympic Games.

The proposals of the IOC include:

  • Performance of athletes from Russia and Belarus only in individual competitions, without using the national anthem, flag or any references to them;
  • Absence of such sportsmen’s “active support” of Russian aggression against Ukraine (posts on social networks, public statements, demonstration of symbols associated with the support of the war);
  • These athletes must not be military personnel or security service personnel.

Other items remain in the IOC’s recommendations, such as mandatory compliance of all Russian and Belarusian athletes wishing to participate in the Olympics with anti-doping rules and a complete ban on official participation in the Games by officials from these countries.
