During archaeological excavations in an old quarry near the city of Diyarbakır in Turkey, a cemetery was discovered where 54 children under the age of 6 were buried.

Arkeonews writes about this with reference to Anadolu Agency.

So far, we have found 54 graves, the excavation process is ongoing. Probably after the site was used as a quarry, it was turned into a necropolis (a cemetery belonging to an ancient city) and only children were buried here“, says the acting director of the Diyarbakır Museum, Muydat Gizligol.

Archaeologists discovered that some graves contained more than one child.

Only children were buried here

A burial site where all the bones belong to children is not a common occurrence. For this reason, a detailed study of age, gender and cause of death will be carried out“, Gizligol adds.

Dr. Nazli Akbash noted that during previous excavations in the area, the ruins of a church dating back to the early Byzantine period, about 1,500 years ago, were discovered. Since there was a culture of “saints” and “martyrs” in early Byzantium, burials could be on the territory of the church.

The excavation process continues

According to the results of the preliminary examination, the babies and children did not die due to the epidemic, but a detailed examination of the skeletons has not yet been carried out.

Anemia was a very common disease for this period and for this geography. We did not find any signs of any epidemic disease.

We believe that the burials belong to the early Christian period. Therefore, infants and children who were not baptized were not yet considered Christians. So they probably could have been buried outside the church, not inside it.” – concludes Nazli Akbash.
