An Iranian activist was beaten with a whip for a photo without a hijab

In Iran, activists were sentenced to 74 lashes after posting a photo without a hijab on social media.
The verdict states that she “violated public morals”, The Telergaph and The Jerusalem Post reported.
33-year-old activist of Kurdish origin Roya Heshmati was accused of “encouraging permissiveness”. She published her photo without a headscarf on social networks.

The woman was detained back in April 2023. On January 3, the sentence in the form of 74 lashes “for violation of public morality” was carried out “in accordance with the law and Sharia.” She was also sentenced to one year of conditional imprisonment and a three-year ban on leaving the country.

According to the human rights organization Hengaw, Heshmati also came to the courtroom without a hijab as a sign of protest. The workers forcibly pulled a scarf over her head and handcuffed her so that Heshmati could not remove it.
The activist compared the place of execution to a medieval torture chamber.
“The iron door creaked open to reveal a room with cement walls. There was a bed equipped with handcuffs and iron chains welded on both sides. In the middle of the room stood an iron device that looked like a large easel, with places for handcuffs and a rusty iron bracket in the center. In addition, behind the door stood a chair and a small table on which various whips were lying.” – described Roya Heshmati.
The executioner wrapped a leather whip around her hand and beat the activist on her shoulders, back, hips and legs.
During this, she softly hummed: “In the name of woman, in the name of life, the clothes of slavery are torn, our black night will dawn, and all whips will be chopped with axes…”

After leaving the institution, Heshmati took off her hijab again.
