Ancient mosaics depicting sea creatures were discovered in Turkey

In the province of Mardin, located in the southeast of Turkey, archaeologists discovered mosaics from the Roman period, which depict sea creatures. They were found at the site of illegal archaeological excavations.
On October 2, 2023, employees of the Mardin Museum continued to explore the area that was once a walled suburb. In its course, mosaic tiles were discovered, writes Arkeonews.
According to the researchers, the mosaic tiles with a total area of approximately 100 square meters depict fish scales, triangles, hexagons and octagons. There are also motifs of arches, images of trees, waterfowl, octopuses, fish, mussels, seals, eels and aquatic plants.
The director of the museum, Abdulghani Tarkan, calls the find very important. According to him, this Roman settlement, located between Kyzyltepe and Artuklu districts, is not just a rural villa – it encompasses various architectural remains, including living quarters and a necropolis.

The finds date back to the V-VII centuries. Scientists believe that the mosaics belong to the early Byzantine – late Roman period.
“These mosaics, decorated with figures of animals and rare sea creatures, are characteristic of this region. Our priority is to preserve these historical relics to prevent further deterioration“, the director of the museum emphasized.

In the future, these unique mosaic artifacts are planned to be exhibited in a museum, adds Tarkan.
