In the ancient Roman city of Pompeii, archaeologists found a fresco depicting a scene from ancient Greek mythology. It is made in bright colors and is an exquisite work of art.

The mural is painted as if it were a framed picture hanging on a yellow wall. It depicts the mythical tale of Phrixus and his twin sister Hella, who together fled from their stepmother Ino on a magical ram with a golden fleece, writes The Guardian.

“This is a wonderful and well-preserved fresco. The myth of Phrixus and Hellas was popular in Pompeii. The brother and sister were forced to flee because the stepmother wanted to get rid of them. She planned to do this through deception and corruption. However, Hella fell into the water and drowned,” – said Gabriel Zuchtrigel, director of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii.

Hella is depicted on the verge of drowning: she reaches for her brother, but her face is already covered by the waves.

The fresco is planned to be restored, but first it will be cleaned of volcanic ash.

As you know, the ancient city of Pompeii was destroyed in AD 79 by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which killed more than 2,000 people. Its ruins have become one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world.

Pompeii is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the second most visited tourist attraction in Italy after the Colosseum in Rome.
