Archaeologists in southern Spain discovered thousands of years old sandals and baskets in a cave

The age of the sandals and basket was confirmed by radiocarbon dating. Researchers have determined that the sandals are 6,200 years old, and the basket is even older – 9,500 years old.
“The biggest discovery was the age of baskets – it was a big surprise. There were hunter-gatherers before the advent of agriculture. In the past, scientists thought that basket weaving was a Neolithic element, but now we know that people were weaving baskets even earlier.” – said the lead author of the study, Francisco Martínez-Sevilla from the University of Alcalá.
He also added that the level of detail used to create the baskets was difficult for the time. Some even had intricate geometric decorations made of human hair and pigments.

The author of the study also mentioned the well-preserved condition of the found items. This is explained by the layout of the cave and its low humidity.
He added that there is a narrow canyon inside that faces north. Dry, cold wind blows through it, which enters the upper part of the cave and blows it through.
