A British algorithm based on artificial intelligence may have solved the mystery of the masterpiece “Madonna with a Rose” by the Italian artist Raffaele Santi.

The AI tool, developed in Bradford, found that most of the picture was painted by Raphael, but Joseph’s face was created by someone else’s hand, reports The Guardian.

The painting “Madonna with a Rose” (Madonna della Rosa), which depicts Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus with John the Baptist, is now kept in the Prado Museum in Madrid.

It has intrigued art connoisseurs and experts for centuries and is considered one of the most famous masterpieces of the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael.

However, in the 19th century, doubts arose about the authorship of the picture.

Some said that the figure of Joseph has an uncharacteristic appearance for that period and cannot belong to the brush of Raphael. Others believed that he did not draw the lower part with the rose.

The picture has now been analyzed by an AI-based tool developed by Professor Hasan Ugailo from the University of Bradford.

AI believes that most of the painting belongs to Raphael, but Joseph’s face is painted by a different hand. The lower part “most likely” belongs to Raphael.

We will remind you that Raphael Santi is an Italian painter, graphic designer and architect of the Umbrian and later Roman school, who often depicted the Madonna in his paintings.

Raphael was one of the brightest representatives of Renaissance art. Among his outstanding works – “Sistine Madonna”, “Florentine lady with a unicorn”, fresco “School of Athens” and others.
