The bear, which is being investigated by the police of the Khmelnytskyi region, was taken to the rehabilitation center for brown bears in Transcarpathia.
In August 2023, animal rights activists filed a complaint with the police about improper keeping of a wild animal: the bear lived in a cramped enclosure without access to a reservoir. In the pool that was in the cage, instead of water, there was swamp, the organization UAnimals reported at the time.
As the National Police notes, immediately after the opening of the criminal proceedings regarding the cruel treatment of the bear, the investigators initiated the study of the conditions of keeping the animal, to which specialized services were involved.
“After receiving qualified conclusions, the law enforcement officers petitioned the local authorities to transport the animal from the zoo in Khmelnytskyi, where it had lived since birth, to the rehabilitation center for brown bears in Zakarpattia.” – say the National Police.
Zoologists allowed the move and Balu has already left for his new place of residence in the Synevyr National Nature Park.
