In Southeast Asia, the air temperature reached 42°С. Climatologists record such indicators for the first time in early April.

World Meteorological Organization warned that temperatures will be higher than the average seasonal value. Such weather has been explained by climate changes caused by human activity, as well as El Nino (ENSO) – a climatic phenomenon of fluctuations in winds and sea surface temperatures, which causes heat and dryness of the air.

Due to abnormally high temperatures in the Philippines, thousands of schools canceled face-to-face classes. The local weather bureau reported that in some areas the heat reached 42°C, which corresponds to a dangerous level. The population is warned about possible heat cramps and exhaustion.

In Indonesia, dry weather caused a sharp rise in rice prices. According to report Reuters, the cost of rice – the staple food for the country’s 270 million inhabitants – rose more than 16% in February.

At the end of April in Manila, children were saved by portable swimming pools. In the country, teachers reported dizziness and headaches, noted that due to the heat, students not only had problems with concentration, but also deteriorated their health.

Scientists are also concerned that corals in the Gulf of Thailand may die due to extreme water temperatures.

Professor Benjamin Horton, director of the Singapore Earth Observatory, claims that scientists did not predict such high temperatures in the near future.

“The level of warming the globe has experienced over the past 12 months, both on land and in the ocean, has surprised science. We always knew we would be heading in this direction with increased greenhouse gas emissions, but the fact that we will beat all these records in 2023 and 2024 may be a little ahead of time,” – he notes.

The scientist believes that reducing greenhouse gas emissions will not instantly solve the problem. In his opinion, humanity will have to live in conditions of high temperatures for at least another 50 years.
