Bleeding was discovered: a speleologist who was trapped in an underground cave is being rescued in Turkey

An operation is underway in Turkey to rescue a seriously ill American speleologist (cave researcher) who was trapped underground. 40-year-old Mark Dickie was in Morka Cave at a depth of more than a kilometer when he developed gastrointestinal bleeding. A man fell seriously ill during a research mission he went on with his fiancee and another fellow speleologist, Sky News and The Independent reported. The operation will be very difficult and may take several days, say the Turkish Speleologists’ Federation. The scientist has been at the bottom of the cave since September 3. It takes an experienced caver 15 hours to reach the surface under ideal conditions. “The cave has narrow winding passages and several rope descents,” experts explain. American Mark Dickey is himself an instructor of the US National Cave Rescue Commission (NCRC), which is highly respected in the international speleological society. The scientist led an expedition to find and map a new passage in Turkey’s Morka cave, which is the third deepest in the country, but suddenly his health deteriorated. During the last days, doctors tried to improve the researcher’s condition in order to begin the evacuation. Mark got a little better when the team was able to give him 6 units of blood to stop the gastrointestinal bleeding. However, the researcher cannot walk without assistance and needs a stretcher to be transported. “Teams continue to install rope lines inside the cave to pull out the stretchers,” emergency workers said. More than 150 specialists from all over Europe, including Turkey, Italy, Hungary, Croatia and Bulgaria, are participating in the rescue operation.
