his mother Nadia Kryvtsovaunder the poet’s last publication, she left a comment announcing his death: “My dearest son will grow violets“.

In doing so, she quoted a poem he posted on his Facebook page on January 5.

My head is rolling from landing to landing

like a rolling field

or a ball

my hands are torn off

will sprout violets in the spring

my legs

dogs and cats will stretch

my blood

will paint the world a new red

Pantone human blood […] “.

Maxim Kryvtsov – poet, military man, author of the book “Poems from the Pit”, recognized as one of the best Ukrainian books of 2023 by the Ukrainian PEN.

He participated in the Revolution of Dignity, and then went to the front as a volunteer in 2014. He fought in the 5th battalion of the Ukrainian Volunteer Corps “Right Sector” and together with the “Da Vinci Wolves”. As noted in the “Novynarnya” publication, until 2019 Maksym Kryvtsov was a senior machine gunner in the “Rubizh” Rapid Response Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine.

Call sign “Dali” in the service chose quickly, as he shared in an interview for “Chitomo”: “Everything is very simple. They asked me what my call sign was. Before that, I didn’t think about it, I didn’t choose anything special. But then he grew a mustache to curl like Salvador Dali. That’s how the call sign asked itself, like an excellent student to the blackboard“.

He spoke sincerely and respectfully about his brothers: “The best people in the world. Sometimes I photograph them, sometimes I write about them“.

We spoke with him in April 2023 for the “Words and Bullets” project. His voice was quiet, his thoughts short and deep, his feelings warm and soft. When writing the introduction to the book, I couldn’t help but quote him: “Most often you can meet God at the front in the midst of silence, he is water and black dry sunflowers, and most of all God is to return“, the author of the interview said Natalia Kornienko.

After demobilization, Maksym also worked at the Center for Rehabilitation and Readaptation of ATO and OOS participants and Veteran Hub. With the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia and the territory of Ukraine in 2022, he returned to the front again.

Three days ago you fell asleep in arms on your sofa with your girlfriend, on the evening of February 24 you spent the night in a military unit, and the next night on the same sofa the weapons and equipment that we managed to get were stacked“, Maksym said in a text for Suspilne Kultura.

Maksym Kryvtsov started writing poems even before the war, but he noted that the clear topics he would like to write about appeared only recently. His poetry was published in various collections: “Among the sirens“, “The book Love 2.0. Love and war“, “Where at home: 112 poems about love and war“, “Lullaby of the 21st Century Vol. 1: What Rocks You?”. In December 2022, his own was released – “Poems from the loophole“. In addition to poems, there are also photographs taken by Maksym Kryvtsov.

I’m looking at the anthology of war poems “Between the Sirens”, which was published in June 2023, and I understand: another black frame appeared in it. Now there are already two: Vika Amelina and Maksym Kryvtsov. And also Boris Humenyuk, about whom there is no news for a long time, but I really want to believe that there will be no frame, that he is alive somewhere. I want to hide this book somewhere very far away, in some impenetrable capsule, so that these black frames will no longer crawl there, like cockroaches, like shashille. – wrote the poet and literary critic Ostap Slyvinsky.

Maksym gave the first readings of his poems for children from the “Striped Raccoons” camp, where he worked as an instructor and photographer. I planned to hold a real presentation of the collection later.

How talented Max was. With what ease and joy I recommended him to everyone as a poet. About a week ago, I received from him his newly published book of poems, which he was so proud of. At the stage of the manuscript, he consulted with me about the selection of poems, and about the structure of the collection, and about all sorts of little things. I was really happy to write a review for the cover, because I really love his poems“, the film director and writer wrote Iryna Tsylyk.

His poetry can be heard in the Radio Promin project “A day that shouldn’t be“.

A Ukrainian writer shared his memories of Maksym Lubko Deresh. He taught a course on the veterans’ program “Voices of War” and published a synopsis of a novel submitted by a poet. The novel should also be about the war.

…When we return from rotations, drive home in a car, we do not feel happy, although we want to return. Probably We feel one thing – emptiness. One void common to all, collective, like a memory. We choke on it and suffocate from its fumes. So. I want to tell you about the high-rise building, on the 77th floor of which is the office of the TV channel “Oblivion”. The whole story will take place within the most terrible program in the world “Talk Show War”…

They wrote about him, honoring his memory Pavlo Vyshebaba, Andrii Khlyvnyuk, Oksana Zabuzhko.

I remembered Maksym from some joint poetry reading in February 2022, literally “a week before” – the atmosphere in the city was already heated, and I went to that reading exclusively “for the idea” – to demonstrate to everyone and myself that ” it’s raining, but we’re splashing”; […] I didn’t listen to other readers well, because every now and then someone came up to me and chatted, but Maxima remembered: something was real in him, and his semi-prose recitative had that drive with an admixture of existential longing that is always inseparable from ” portrait of a young artist”, when something should come of that artist…Zabuzhko wrote.

A song based on his poems, called “Yellow tape” performed Yurkesh for the film “Our Cats” – an adventure comedy about the Ukrainian military in 2014. During the full-scale invasion, Yurkesh recorded two more songs to the words of Kryvtsov – “Dominant height” and “He is from ZSU, she is from TRO“.
