In March, licenses for Russian online cinemas to show films, cartoons and series from the American studio Disney will expire. The film company does not plan to extend them due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine – the content will be removed from video services.
Four top managers of video services told Vedomosti about this and a source familiar with the terms of the deals confirmed it.
In response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Disney studio, like other film companies, stopped the distribution and licensing of its productions in Russia. However, Disney content is still available in Russian online cinemas. According to the agreement with the studio, her films and series were left on the platforms until the expiration of the licenses for their showing, Vedomosti writes.
According to two top managers of movie services, Disney’s production attracts users: this follows from the viewing hours and the increase in subscribers. Children’s and family content is most popular: cartoons “The Lion King”, “Soul”, “Cold Heart” and films “Cruella”, “Home Alone”.
The exclusion of Disney from the libraries of Russian video services can lead to a decrease in the revenue of online cinemas by 2-3%, Vedomosti writes.
In December 2022, instead of the Disney channel, which was second in the ranking of children’s channels in Russia, the “Sun” TV channel with “predominantly Russian content” was launched. Disney has shown in Russia since 2010.
- In February, films about the wizard Harry Potter were removed from Russian online cinemas: Warner Bros. also did not renew the license to show them. Earlier, the studio banned the broadcast of its films by Russian TV channels that are part of the National Media Group. These are STS, REN-TV, “Pyatiy Kanal” and “Domashnyi”, as well as video service more.tv.
